Zeal, Zest, and Zing (Day 26–A-Z Blog Challenge)

“Z” is for Zeal, Zest, and Zing.

Energy comes from life.  Energy comes from emotions.  Energy comes from people.  Those people whom we are with every day will determine our zeal, zest, and zing.

What types of people do you need to build those creative communities?

1. Positive People
2. Realistic People
3. Industrious People
4. Wise People
5. Loving People

Positive People

Nothing gets these people down.  If it is raining, then they are thankful the plants can bloom even more splendiferous.  If it is sunny to the point of a temperature probably felt in some underworld somewhere, then these positive people’s whole aura brightens and they praise the gentle breeze that combines with the glisten upon their faces.  There is always something to celebrate.

We are glad that for Story Crossroads we have many positive people such as Kim Davis and Holly Robison.

Kim Davis is our Executive Committee Secretary.  Do you know how trying it is to keep up with the minutes, especially when our meetings are recorded and there is the forever temptation of listening again and again to make things perfect?  Yet, Kim keeps her positive attitude and is always ready to shout out a “rah, rah” for our adventures.

As for Holly Robison, she is someone that can be called at 2:03am and not get angry.  Her voice could sound tired but do not be fooled.  She is smiling under that tired tone and ready to give a lift to any craziness in life.

Realistic People

These people still appreciate the goodness in the world though also understand that darkness looms.  It is best to be prepared.  You know how 72-hour kits are important to have yet not everyone would be ready in a natural disaster?  These realistic people have 72-hour kits and then some.

We are pleased that for Story Crossroads we have many realistic people such as Mary Ann Kirk and Cassie Ashton.  They are both part of our Advisory Board.  Their lives are too busy to get them to be part of our Steering Committee (though we have tried) yet they both have been instrumental in evolving the mission and goals of Story Crossroads.

Mary Ann and Cassie have both written lengthy emails on questions to consider with organizing Story Crossroads.  Plus, they both talked for hours upon hours by phone or in-person about possible next steps.  Sometimes the bluntness and abruptness can face some resistance.  Though, it does not take long to discover the wisdom of their words.

Industrious People

Some people take a project and say, “Let me at it!”  Then they really go at it.  Anything these people say counts as promises soon to be kept.

Story Crossroads would stay as a dream unless we had the doers.  We have so many industrious people helping us along that it seems cruel not to mention them all.  Though, we do have the above-and-beyond industrious people like Lynn Wing, Janine Nishiguchi, and Sterling Elliott.

Lynn Wing is the Story Crossroads Story Training Chair.  Besides taking part in the monthly Story Crossroads Board Meetings, she has held three committee meetings within two months to get the modules together so people can submit storytelling lesson plans.  She then has submitted pages upon pages of outlines and reports to our delight.

Janine Nishiguchi assists Lynn Wing with the Story Training Committee.  She also attended and participated in the Filming Day and the two Sound Recording Days.  We have had some late nights and she still commits to them.  One time she had to make sure she wore the same clothes for both of the Sound Recording Days while working out carpooling and lines.  That takes talent.

Sterling Elliott has worked way past the midnight hour to prepare the films to be used for Story Crossroads.  He is a soon-to-graduate Brigham Young University Film Student with attention to detail and doing more than was ever expected when first called upon to help.  He was there for the 6:00pm-11:00pm Filming Day and for both Sound Recording Days that totaled four more hours.  That does not even count editing.   Talk about commitment.

Wise People

A few people in the world are the ones you would sit down for hours, days, years to bask in the wisdom of their words.  Every moment feels intense as you scrabble to absorb everything spoken by these people.

Yes, we have those wise people helping Story Crossroads.  We have so much awe for Liesl Seborg and Clive Romney.

Liesl Seborg is the Salt Lake County Library Services Liaison for Story Crossroads, and does she know her stuff!  She can rattle off pages of organizations that she has worked with in one way or another.  Can you imagine what that would mean in actual people?  Good thing we learned multiplication in those elementary years. All these people recognize her talents and full-heart she gives constantly.  When she knew of Story Crossroads’ goal to become a nonprofit group, she read a book on how to become a nonprofit.  Then she expounded some of these details for all to benefit.  Ah, yes, wise one!

Clive Romney is one of our designated experts to train potential master story facilitators for Story Crossroads.  He is a “passionate portrayer of the pioneer experience.”  His love of learning from the past to apply to the present time qualifies him all the more as a wise one.  He is a bona fid genuine person who cares for all people no matter how long he knew you—from a few seconds to many years.  People listen to him because he listens.

Loving People

Finally, there are the people who you could be not without.  The love they have for you is enough to sustain through any trial or tribulation.

Oh, how Casey Hedman and “the boys” are these loving ones.

So this crazy gal Rachel Hedman talked about this dream of Story Crossroads.  Did Casey or the boys say, “What are you thinking!” or “Uh, no!” or any such talk?  No.

One time this Casey drove a 4-hour trip to Idaho and then repeated that 4-hour trip so Rachel would not have to drive alone at night for a storytelling commitment.  She did not ask.  He offered, and she was only too happy for the company.  This is the same Casey who proposed to Rachel through a story that merged their dating life with the fairy tale world.  He knew what this lady liked and he supported it from the beginning.

When Casey and Rachel adopted two boys, these little ones had plenty of hugs and shouts of “I love you” to get through the hard times.  Those expressions of love are not always appreciated as much as what ought to be done in the moment.  Though reflecting back, Rachel knows how blessed she is to have Casey and the boys in her life.

Now it is up to you.  Who are those positive, realistic, industrious, wise, and loving people who bring you zeal, zest, and zing?  Tell these people today how much they mean to you.
