Illuminating the Illusions – A to Z Blog Challenge

Stories are already magic.  Then add some illusions to the experience?  MAGIC indeed!

We are pleased that Kim Walkowski, a story magician, has guest written this piece of how to merge story with magic.  He will also perform at the Story Crossroads Festival on April 15-16, 2016 at the Viridian Event Center (8030 S. 1825 W., West Jordan, UT).

Five Tips:

#1  Create a Feeling.  When combining story with magic, many Magicians try to create the particular feeling of Wow.  My favorite is Wonder.  Not as in ” I wonder how he did that?”  But rather as in experiencing the wonder of everything in and around you. Focusing more on a good story then adding a little magic as an added surprise.

#2  Magic of Drama vs. Magic of Trickery.   HENNING NELMS of Magic and Showmanship said, “The magic of drama is infinitely more powerful than the magic of trickery.  It is as available to the conjurer as it is to the actor.  The only difference is that actors take it for granted, whereas few conjurers are even aware that it exists.”  Storytelling with magic is used by the performer to accomplish several goals:  1- to tell a story; 2- to establish or showcase their character; 3- to solve a problem;  4-  to make a statement; or 5- to instruct/educate.  And the fundamental purpose is to entertain, amaze, and create wonder within the story.

#3  Magician in Disguise.  ROBERT HOUDIN said that a magician is an actor playing the part of a magician. This is a good point and the best magicians get it.  I find that if people don’t even know I am a magician then when the magic happens it is a more an unexpected surprise.  This is what I try to create with a story.  To get them focused and evolved with the story then when a little magic comes out it adds another dimension to the story.

#4  Winning the Audience Over without the Competition.  When I perform magic as a magician, it sometimes seems like a competition.  The audience thinks, “Ok, Mr. Magic Man, fool me!”  I do not like this and I try to win them over by being nice, not embarrassing anyone, and try to bring some amazement and wonder or disbelief in their lives for a brief moment.   By telling a engaging story they are on your side at the start.

#5 Delve into Research.  To learn some magic, you can go to the Library and check out some books at the 798.3 Dewey Decimal area.

Magic becomes an art when it has nothing to hide.

Cinco consejos:

#1 crea un sentimiento.  Al combinar historia con magia, muchos magos intentan crear la particular sensación de Wow. Mi favorito es el asombro. #3  Mago disfraz.  ROBERT HOUDIN dice que un mago es un actor que interpreta el papel de un mago. Este es un buen momento y los mejores magos get it. Me parece que si la gente ni siquiera saben que soy un mago, entonces cuando sucede la magia es más una sorpresa inesperada. Esto es lo que intento crear con una historia. Para conseguir su atención y evolucionado con la historia, entonces cuando un poco de magia sale añade otra dimensión a la historia.

#4 ganar la audiencia más sin la competencia.  Cuando realizo la magia como un mago, que a veces parece una competición. El público piensa, “Ok, Sr. Magic Man, tonto de mí!” no me gusta esto y voy a ganarles por ser agradable, no embarazoso nadie, y tratar de traer alguna sorpresa y asombro o incredulidad en sus vidas por un breve momento. Por narrar una atractiva historia están de su lado en el inicio.

#5 profundiza en la investigación.  Para aprender algo de magia, puede ir a la biblioteca y echa un vistazo a algunos libros en la zona Decimal Dewey 798.3.                                 

La magia se convierte en un arte cuando no tiene nada que ocultar.
