Dr. Armando Solórzano is an Associate Professor at the University of Utah, holding joint appointments in the Departments of Ethnic Studies and Family and Consumer Studies. Renowned for his dedication to documenting and elevating Latino and Chicano histories in Utah, he has been instrumental in reshaping public understanding of the state’s cultural landscape. His acclaimed book, We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe / Recuerdo, Celebración, y Esperanza: Latinos in Utah, combines oral histories and rare photographs to chronicle the deep-rooted presence and contributions of Latinos in Utah, dating back over 5,000 years . This work has not only earned the Meritorious Book Award from the Utah Division of State History but is also being considered for inclusion in K–12 curricula to foster greater cultural awareness among students.
Beyond his publications, Dr. Solórzano is known for his innovative use of ethno-photo-history and community-based research. His traveling exhibits, such as “Invisible No More: Latinx’s Dignity March in Utah,” have reached audiences nationwide, offering visual narratives of pivotal moments like the 2006 immigration reform march in Salt Lake City . A recipient of the University of Utah’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2019, Dr. Solórzano continues to inspire through courses on ethnic minority families, diaspora communities, and transnational identities, while mentoring the next generation of scholars and community leaders .
