Yodeling is the angel singing of the mountains and the plains.  Connecting with the vibe and sound takes some practice.  Once mastered, this skill is perfect to combine with storytelling.

Rene’ Sheets is famous for her yodeling stories.  She started with one yodeling story and then her yodeling repertoire grew as more and more people requested the way she could yodel and yammer together.

We are pleased that Rene’ Sheets guest wrote this piece to give an idea to her origins and simultaneously giving advice on any of us combining the arts of any kind.  I have also given some commentary in italics (also known as my yammering) based on a phone conversation we had on the topic.

Passion to Learn…

What made me want to learn to yodel and how I learned?

I have always loved yodeling.  Since I was a little girl I have been fascinated with yodeling so when a friend gave me some tips on how to do it, I began practicing. I sat in my car where no one could hear me as I worked and worked on creating my own style.

Commentary:  Rene’ said that she wanted to be away from others while she practiced because learning to yodel sounds awful in the beginning.  I thought this was much like when someone learns to play an instrument like the piano or the violin.  It can be irritating to those in proximity of the learner–sometimes even more irritating to the learner.  With time, the sounds turn marvelous. 

Self-taught, Self-motivated…

Soon I had an opportunity to travel to Switzerland to gather stories.  I wrote my first two yodeling stories inspired by my favorite story “Heidi.”  From this came my character of Little Goat Peter and the Grandfather who lived on the Alm in the Swiss Alps. I bought CDs from a music store in Bern, Switzerland on my first visit there.  I would sing along with the ones I liked, and then began creating my own songs to sing with my stories.

Commentary:  Not everyone will have a chance to travel to Switzerland to learn to yodel or to do research.  Rene’ made good use of her trip.  Luckily, with libraries nearby, any of us can “travel” to another land and learn what we need to in order to improve.

Building Repertoire of Stories with Yodeling…

I built my repertoire of yodeling stories by delving into how yodeling originated.  No one really knows how yodeling began, but it was used to send messages throughout the villages and through the valleys and over the mountains. They had a yodel to announce a town meeting, to call their children home from play, and to announce the birth of a new baby. It was a form of communication in the early days of Switzerland.  Today it is used only as folk music as we use Cowboy yodeling here in America.  It is for entertainment to share the culture and traditions of a people gone by.

Commentary:  Before my conversation with Rene’, I had no idea that there were different kind of yodeling.  I only was aware of the yodeling that came from Switzerland.  I never thought of the cowboys.  Rene’ could have chosen to learn to yodel and not worry about the research.  She loved her art so much that she put in more than was required to be good on stage.  Let that be how each of us treat our art.

Yodeling & Yammering

Yodeling es el ángel cantando de las montañas y las llanuras. Conectando con el vibe y sonido requiere cierta práctica. Una vez dominado, esta habilidad es perfecto para combinar con la narración.

Rene’ Sheets es famoso por su yodeling historias. Ella empezó con una historia y luego yodeling su repertorio yodeling creció a medida que más y más personas solicitan la manera ella podría yodel y yammer juntos.

Pasión por aprender…

Lo que me hizo querer aprender a yodel y cómo he aprendido?

Siempre he amado yodeling. Desde que era una niña me ha fascinado con yodeling así que cuando un amigo me dio algunos consejos sobre cómo hacerlo, comencé a practicar. Me senté en mi coche, donde nadie podía oír como me y trabajado en crear mi propio estilo.

Comentario: René’, dijo que quería estar alejado de los demás mientras ella practicaba porque aprender a yodel suena horrible en el comienzo. Pensé que esto era así cuando alguien aprende a tocar un instrumento como el piano o el violín. Puede ser irritante para aquellos en la proximidad del estudiante–a veces incluso más irritante para el alumno. Con el tiempo, la vuelta de sonidos maravillosos.

Autodidacta, auto-motivados…

Pronto tuve la oportunidad de viajar a Suiza para recoger historias. Escribí mis dos primeras historias yodeling inspirado por mi historia favorita “Heidi.” Desde este vino mi carácter de cabra poco Pedro y el abuelo, que vivía en el Alm en los Alpes Suizos. He comprado CDs desde una tienda de música en Berna, Suiza, en mi primera visita allí. Quiero cantar con la que me gustaba, y luego empezó a crear mis propias canciones para cantar con mis historias.

Comentario: No todos tendrán la oportunidad de viajar a Suiza para aprender a yodel o hacer la investigación. Rene’ se hizo buen uso de su viaje. Afortunadamente, con bibliotecas cercanas, cualquiera de nosotros puede “viajar” a otra tierra y aprender lo que necesitamos para mejorar.

Construcción de repertorio de historias con Yodeling…

Construí mi repertorio de historias yodeling yodeling ahondando en cómo se originó. Nadie sabe realmente cómo yodeling comenzó, pero fue utilizado para enviar mensajes a través de las aldeas y a través de los valles y sobre las montañas. Tenían un yodel para anunciar una reunión municipal, para llamar a sus hijos en la casa de juego, y para anunciar el nacimiento de un nuevo bebé. Es una forma de comunicación en los primeros días de Suiza. Hoy en día se utiliza sólo como música folk como utilizamos Cowboy yodeling aquí en los Estados Unidos. Es para el entretenimiento para compartir la cultura y las tradiciones de un pueblo que ha quedado atrás.

Comentario: Antes de mi conversación con René, yo no tenía ni idea de que existen diferentes tipo de yodeling. Yo sólo era consciente del yodeling que vinieron de Suiza. Nunca pensé que de los vaqueros. Rene’ podría haber elegido para aprender a yodel y no preocuparse por la investigación. Amaba su arte tanto que puso en más de lo que se requería para ser buenos en el escenario. Quiero que cada uno de nosotros cómo tratar nuestro arte.
